Wild Arms 2

Wild Arms 2 is not a direct sequel to the first Wild Arms, although it is set in the same fictional world of Filgaia, which combines elements of the Old West, steampunk and fantasy. The turn-based combat system against randomly appearing enemies is similar to that of its predecessor, and features unique techniques for each character, as well as the Guardian system, which lets characters summon powerful creatures to assist them in battle. Three fighters can be actively used in the battles, but the player can also replace each of them with a reserve character, up to six in total.
Story
A thousand years earlier, a great calamity swept over the land of Filgaia. The cause was a demon known as Lord Blazer. Many heroes tried and failed to defeat him, until a girl with the magical sword Argetlahm appeared and fought him, eventually managing to defeat him. However, she was unable to kill him, but traded her life to seal Lord Blazer forever. The girl's name was forgotten over time and she became known simply as a swordmage. In modern times, Filgaia is a desolate land that continues to die out. Much of the world has already become a desert, and the few green areas that remain are becoming fewer and fewer. Ashley Winchester, a member of a military unit near Meria Boule, becomes embroiled in the fate of the world when his group becomes involved in an experiment to summon demons. This experiment is being conducted by the sinister organization Odessa in order to resurrect Lord Blazer - or so it seems. After all his friends and comrades are possessed by demons, Ashley is eventually taken over by them too. After killing all his former comrades, he lays claim to the legendary Argetlahm, which was brought to the summoning ceremony as a relic. After coming into contact with it, he confronts both the demon within him, Lord Blazer himself, and the bearer of the sword, the swordmage. He succeeds in subduing Lord Blazer for the time being, and Ashley flees back to his hometown of Meria. But that is not the end for Ashley. He soon receives an offer from a mysterious man named Irving to join an elite team of fighters called "ARMS" (Agile Remote Missions Squad)/(Awkward Rush and Mission Savers). After agreeing, Ashley meets the other two chosen members of ARMS - Lilka Eleniak and Brad Evans; one a former war hero turned criminal, the other a girl training to become a Crest Sorceress. Irving reveals his plans to them: he wants to fight Odessa, who he believes will soon make his presence felt in the world. The three protagonists become embroiled in a series of events that ultimately affect the fate of the world of Filgaia itself.
