Story

The game is set in an alternate timeline where a nuclear holocaust took place in 1998, triggered by the impact of a meteorite cluster that started a global nuclear war. On the day of the disaster, a company of U.S. Army engineers was in the desolate southwestern desert building bridges in an area with several small survival communities and a newly constructed federal prison for death row inmates with light industrial equipment. The soldiers sought shelter in the prison, expelled the inmates, and shortly thereafter invited survivalists from the surrounding area to join them. Years later, together they formed "the Desert Rangers, in the grand tradition of the Texas and Arizona Rangers," to help other survivors in the desert and beyond.
