Touhou Gensoukyou: Lotus Land Story
There are two playable characters to choose from in this game, each with two different attack types. Reimu Hakurei can take up a wide area of the screen with weaker attacks, while Marisa Kirisame relies on her strength to compensate for her smaller attack range. The bombs also behave differently depending on the character chosen, and do different amounts of damage. Lotus Land Story is the Touhou Project's first game to feature bombs that automatically collect items, the ability to move more slowly by holding down the shift key, and a non-trivial scoring system that involves collecting special dream items that increase the player's ultimate point potential. The game's point system also marks the first time in the series that there are point bonuses for eliminating orbs after defeating intermediate and final bosses.
Story
After the events of the previous games, the youkai soon began to raid the Hakurei Shrine, causing Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame to go separately to a lake in the mountains that seems to be the source of a powerful surge. The two reach the gate under the lake, which teleports them to a strange dream world where Reimaden Castle exists, which is said to contain the mastermind. The heroine makes her way to the lake, but encounters a youkai, Orange. Orange did not want to fight, but the heroine attacked Orange just because she was a youkai. The heroine makes her way to the lake, but encounters a vampire, Kurumi. Kurumi tries to prevent the heroine from reaching the island in the mountain lake, but fails. Ironically, Kurumi is not a guardian of the lake or anything. After Kurumi is defeated, the heroine sets out and finds the borderline between the dream world and the real world. However, the heroine meets Elly, the gatekeeper of the border. Elly finds that depending on who you use, either a shrine maiden or a mage has entered the world. Elly is fought and defeated, allowing the heroine to enter the dream world. After that, the heroine explores the dream world, but meets either Reimu or Marisa, depending on which role you play. They are surprised to see each other and then fight each other. The heroine wins as usual and forces the other to leave the dream world. The heroine goes deeper into the dream world, but meets Yuuka, who has just woken up and is upset that someone is in her mansion at this hour. They fight and the heroine wins. However, Yuuka retreats and runs away. The heroine is forced to chase her, leading to the final stage. Yuuka reappears and fights the heroine one last time, but Yuuka loses again. Later, the heroine goes to another unknown dream world. While exploring the dream world, the heroine meets Mugetsu, a maid who claims that this dream world belongs to her. Mugetsu doesn't seem to know about the huge power boost, but fights the heroine anyway because she is bored. Mugetsu is defeated and asks her older twin sister, Gengetsu, for help. Mugetsu leaves and Gengetsu comes to the battlefield. Gengetsu doesn't know what's going on, but she knows it's her job to defeat the heroine. But of course the heroine wins and the twin sisters are defeated.
