Touhou Chireiden: Subterranean Animism

Touhou Chireiden: Subterranean Animism

Touhou Chireiden: Subterranean Animism is the eleventh main game in the Touhou Project scrolling shooter series. In Subterranean Animism, there are two playable characters, each with three weapon types, representing a youkai that supports them from above. Like Mountain of Faith, collecting power items adds up to four "option" satellites around the character, which behave differently depending on the character and weapon type, and can be sacrificed for a bomb effect. Unlike Mountain of Faith, each bomb behaves differently and some cause special game effects.

Story

One day, many evil spirits suddenly went around Gensokyo. Reimu Hakurei, a shrine girl, and Marisa Kirisame, a mage dressed in black, became suspicious. They go underground to ask them to stop driving them to the surface of Gensokyo. Depending on who you choose, one of them goes to investigate. The heroine makes her way underground, but encounters a Tsuchigumo, Yamame Kurodani, who tries to stop the heroine from going further. Yamame is quickly defeated and the heroine continues on her way. She continues on to a bridge that leads to the Old City, but encounters the bridge guardian of Jealousy, Parsee Mizuhashi, who also tries to stop the heroine from continuing. Parsee is obviously defeated, and the heroine continues on to the Ancient City. The Ancient City is populated by Oni, and so she meets Yuugi Hoshiguma. After defeating Yuugi as a midboss, Yuugi follows the heroine and shoots Danmaku. After that, they fight and the heroine is victorious. Yuugi tells the heroine where the Palace of Earth Spirits is. The heroine enters the palace of earth spirits and sees a cat following her. Later, the heroine meets the master of the Palace of Earth Spirits, Satori Komeiji. After Satori is defeated, she allows the heroine to go through and talk to her pets. The heroine goes to a much hotter place. There she meets a cat, Rin Kaenbyou. The cat transforms into her youkai form and is surprised that a human made it this far. Rin tries to stop the heroine from going on to what she says is the most dangerous bird underground. However, Rin is defeated. The heroine finally reaches a place even hotter than the previous one. She sets off, but encounters Rin again. Rin explains that if the heroine dies, she will burn so badly that not even ashes will be left. Rin attacks the heroine again, but is defeated. The heroine finally reaches Utsuho Reiuji, the most dangerous bird under the earth. Utsuho has eaten the god Yatagarasu and claimed the nuclear powers for himself. Utsuho declares that with these powerful nuclear forces she will usurp world domination, which has Rin Kaenbyou worried because she sent evil spirits to the world above. The heroine defeats Utsuho to prevent her plan to take over Gensokyo. After Utsuho is defeated, she says that it was Kanako Yasaka who whispered to her to swallow Yatagarasu. Some time later, the heroine decides to pay a visit to the Moriya Shrine to find out more. While trying to find Kanako, she encounters Sanae Kochiya. Sanae is defeated and the heroine moves on until she suddenly meets Satori Komeiji's little sister, Koishi Komeiji. Koishi asks where the goddess of the shrine is, but the heroine tells Koishi that they are actually doing the same thing. Koishi explains that she went all the way from the underworld to the upperworld to visit this shrine. Koishi learns that the heroine defeated her older sister, Satori. Koishi asked to fight the heroine because she was able to defeat Utsuho, so the heroine must be stronger. After Koishi is defeated, Suwako Moriya, the true goddess of Moriya Shrine, appears in Reimu's story. According to Suwako, Kanako is on a shopping spree. Apparently, Koishi wanted a dark power of love for her pets. In Marisa's story, after Koishi is defeated, Sanae Kochiya, a shrine maid of Moriya Shrine, tells Koishi and Marisa that Suwako and Kanako are on their way.
