Torment: Tides of Numenera

Torment: Tides of Numenera

Torment: Tides of Numenera is a game set in the world of Monte Cook's new tabletop role-playing game, Numenera. Torment continues the thematic legacy of Planescape: Torment, the critically acclaimed 1999 role-playing game that is considered by many to be the hallmark of storytelling in computer role-playing games. With Torment, we are creating a rich role-playing experience that explores similarly deep, personal themes.

Story

Numenera is set in a distant future where the rise and fall of countless civilizations has left the Earth in a near-medieval state, with most people living in simple settlements surrounded by relics from the mysterious past. The present age is called the "Ninth World" by scholars. They believe that eight great ages existed and were destroyed or disappeared for unknown reasons before their time, leaving behind ruins and various oddities and artifacts. These artifacts are known as "Numenera" and represent what remains of the science and technology of these past civilizations. Many of them are broken beyond repair, but some still function in ways beyond the understanding of most people who believe these items to be magical in nature. The protagonist of the story, the so-called Last Deceased, is the final vessel for the consciousness of an old man who managed to find a way to leave his physical body and be reborn in a new one, gaining a kind of immortality with the help of the relics. However, he did not know that each time he left these host bodies, they awoke with a consciousness of their own and no longer remembered their former master or his deeds. The deeds of this man, referred to by some as the "Altered God," drew the enmity of the "Angel of Entropy," who now seeks to destroy him and his creations. The Last Castoff, one of these "creations", is also targeted by the Angel and must find his master before both are destroyed. To do this, the protagonist must explore the Ninth World, discovering other castoffs and making friends and enemies along the way. One means for this exploration are the "Meres" - artifacts that allow their user to gain control over the lives of other castoffs and experience other worlds or dimensions through them. On these journeys, the Last Outcast leaves his mark on the world - his legacy - and finds an answer to the fundamental question of history: What does a life mean?
