Tom Clancy's The Division

Story

On Black Friday, New York City is hit by a smallpox pandemic transmitted by a virus carried on banknotes. The disease, known as "Green Poison" or "Dollar Flu," causes widespread chaos, and Manhattan is quarantined. The U.S. government activates sleeper agents in the population who work for the Strategic Homeland Defense Agency, or simply "The Division," to help the task forces, now called the Joint Task Force (JTF), restore order. In Brooklyn, the protagonist, an agent of The Division, assists the JTF before leaving for the quarantine zone with his colleague Faye Lau. However, the VTOL that was supposed to take them there is destroyed in an explosion, killing the Division commander and injuring Faye Lau. The division agents instead arrive by JTF helicopter and recapture the James A. Farley Post Office Building as their base of operations. From there, the agents take on tasks such as rescuing key employees, restoring the base of operations to full working capacity, and fighting criminal groups such as the Rioters, common New York street thugs who want to take advantage of the quarantine, the Rikers, escapees from Rikers Island, and the Cleaners, crazy New York garbage workers who wield flame throwers and believe everyone is infected. Throughout the game, the agent helps save important personnel such as Dr. Jessica Kandel, Captain Roy Benitez and Paul Rhodes. These people run the medical, security and technical wings of the base of operations, respectively. The agents also find a sample of Green Poison. Upon examining the sample, it turns out that the virus was created and then heavily modified by a controversial biologist named Gordon Amherst. Eventually, the agents find footage of Division agent Aaron Keener going rogue and killing other agents. It is also discovered that Keener and other agents who went rogue with him are supporting the Last Man Battalion (LMB), a treasonous private military company that was abandoned by the government during the evacuation and is now hostile to it. Together, these two groups destroyed the VTOL and killed the commander in order to weaken the Division's operations in New York. When the agents intercept a signal from the Russian consulate, they attempt to rescue Vitaly Tchernenko, a Russian virologist who claims to have information about the Green Poison. However, he is kidnapped by Keener and the LMB before the department can reach him. After helping the JTF obtain supplies and weapons, the JTF and Division agents launch an attack on the LMB's base, the vacated United Nations headquarters. The agent finds footage showing Keener and his colleagues leaving the LMB with Tcherneko as a prisoner. The leader of the LMB, Charles Bliss, tries to escape in a helicopter, but the agent destroys the vehicle and kills Bliss. Lau tells the agent that most of the threats have been destroyed or weakened and New York is nearing stability, but an unknown signal leads the agent to a remote laboratory. There they find the remains of Dr. Amherst and discover that he died from his own virus. They also find a message from Keener stating that he has the technology to create a new strain of green poison and plans to do so. He mysteriously instructs the agent to explore the center of Manhattan, the so-called "Dark Zone." The agent learns that the information in the lab will advance the development of a vaccine and is shown a recovered message from Amherst. In it, Amherst reveals that he developed the green toxin as part of his eco-terror plan to decimate the human race and preserve the planet.
