The Secret of Monkey Island

All well and good. If only I could stomach the foul brew of those mean sea dogs, the rest would be a piece of cake. How could I have known that I would meet a powerful and beautiful woman with a jealous suitor who is too stupid to realize that he has been dead for years? And how can I crawl through this great stone ape to find a man who walks three inches above the ground and lights his beard on fire every morning? Do business with quaint and humble shopkeepers. Story

Guybrush Threepwood, a young man with the desire to become a powerful pirate, travels to Melee Island, a pirate haven. Upon his arrival, he meets three "important-looking pirates" in the SCUMM bar, who give him three challenges to test his worthiness. These are to defeat the legendary offended sword master Carla, find buried treasure, and steal a statue from the governor's mansion. During a botched break-in at the mansion, he meets and falls in love with the governor, Elaine Marley. Elsewhere, we see the ghost pirate LeChuck, who longs for the love of his life, that same Elaine Marley, and hatches a plan to capture her. While Guybrush is busy completing the exams, LeChuck and his crew of ghost pirates kidnap her and take her to Monkey Island. After Guybrush completes the exams, he buys a ship from Stan, a used ship dealer, who informs him that a crew of four is needed for the ship. After gathering Carla, the sword-fighting champion he had previously defeated, Meathook, a pirate with two hooks instead of his hands, and Otis, a prisoner in the Monkey Island jail, Guybrush and his crew set sail to rescue them.
