The game is an action role-playing game described by Square Enix as a "cinematic action RPG". Director Hajime Tabata explained that gameplay and action are interwoven through a newly introduced ability called "Overdive". With this ability, the player can swap bodies with one of their team members to control friendly NPCs. The team members can either be instructed to attack specific enemies or defend themselves in combat. The player can switch the character he/she controls in real time, intermingled with his/her combat actions. The game is played over the shoulder, comparable to games like Resident Evil 4, Dead Space, and the Mass Effect series. Throughout the game, Aya can choose from a number of different costumes, but they are only unlocked after playing through the game in various difficulty modes. The in-game clothing deteriorates as it takes damage in combat, revealing Aya's skin to varying degrees.
