Stunts

Stunts

Stunts (also known as 4D Sports Driving) is an early 3D racing video game developed by Distinctive Software, Inc. The game focuses on racing on stunt tracks and has a track editor. It is clearly influenced by the earlier arcade game Hard Drivin' and has many similar elements to the game Stunt Driver, which was released around the same time. In Stunts, players drive a lap around the track with the objective of finishing the lap as quickly as possible without crashing. However, these laps often include special track sections such as loops, jumps (including over tall buildings), slalom tracks and corkscrews. The game area is bounded by a large square area surrounded by a fence designed to prevent the player from leaving it. Players can either race against the clock or choose between six different opponents; there is no support for real-time multiplayer. Stunts features 11 different cars that can be driven with either automatic or manual transmissions. Replays of races can be saved and viewed. Four camera views are available during replays and actual driving, and the dashboard is an optional overlay for all views. It is also possible to continue the race at any point in the replay, but the time for this race is not recorded. Another important feature of the game is the built-in track and terrain editor, which allows the player to design any new tracks or modifications to existing ones.[2] Cars can drive on paved roads, gravel roads, icy/snowy roads, and grass when they go off the track - all of which offer varying amounts of grip. The game features a relatively advanced pseudo-physics engine for the time that can simulate oversteer and understeer; in addition, grip is proportional to the slope of a curve. The game has a 3D engine with flat shading and no textures, it uses polygon graphics for most objects, including trees and road signs, there are few sprites. The resolution is 320×200 with 256 colors. There is an option to select high and low details. The game is written for DOS and runs in real mode[3]. Stunts contains a form of copy protection. Each time you start the program, you must complete a certain sentence from the game instructions before you are allowed to participate in the race. If the player fails to complete the phrase three times, the next race will be loaded anyway. However, about four seconds into the race, the player will be informed that he/she did not disable the car's safety system, the car will crash, and the player will return to the main menu.
