Solaris

Solaris

Solaris is a space combat game for the Atari 2600 that was released by the Atari Corporation in 1986. It was developed by Doug Neubauer, who owns the copyright and the Solaris trademark. The game is a sequel to Neubauer's 1979 Atari 8-bit family game Star Raiders. Both games feature an enemy race, the Cylons, but Star Raiders uses a first-person perspective, while Solaris is set in third-person. Solaris was originally supposed to be based on The Last Starfighter, while the Atari 8-bit version of The Last Starfighter was renamed Star Raiders 2.

Story

The Cylons are back and are trying to conquer the galaxy again! Your goal is to destroy all the Cylon fighters you encounter, rescue cadets trapped on Cylon planets and find the planet Solaris to protect it from the Cylons. Your spaceship is equipped with a galactic map that allows you to travel to different sectors of the galaxy. The map shows the location of Cylon squadrons, Cylon planets, Federation starbases, wormholes, star clusters and Solaris when you find it. By warping to the right sector, you can fight the many types of Cylon fighters and stop them from attacking Federation bases and planets. Your starship has a limited amount of fuel; if the fuel gauge gets too low, you'll need to warp to a Federation starbase to refuel (make sure you have enough fuel to warp). If you are flying over a Cylon-controlled planet, you will see your cadets on the surface. If you rescue all the cadets as you fly by, you will receive bonus points and an extra spaceship. The Cylons have many different types of fighters that you will encounter, as well as some narrow corridors with blockades that you must overcome to reach new locations in the galaxy.
