Shadow Complex
Shadow Complex is presented in the 2.5D format: The game world is fully three-dimensional, but the player can only move in two dimensions, simulating the environment of a classic side-scrolling video game. However, enemies can move in any direction, and the automatic aiming function lets the player shoot at nearby enemies or objects, both inside and outside the 2D plane. Using the right control stick, the player can aim with a laser sight. Shadow Complex's gameplay was inspired by Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The gameplay is strongly based on Metroid: the player can move freely in the sprawling game world and defeat enemies with a variety of weapons. As he/she completes challenges, he/she gains new abilities and weapons that allow him/her to reach new areas. The game rewards the player with experience points when he/she completes objectives and defeats enemies. The player can gain experience levels, with each level improving the character's basic characteristics. These experience levels give the player abilities such as improved shooting accuracy or damage resistance. Special rewards such as revealing the entire map and unlimited special ammunition are granted at certain levels. When the player starts a new game, he/she loses all weapons and items acquired, but retains the character's experience level and any benefits he/she has already received from that experience. In addition to the main campaign, there are a number of challenge levels, called "Proving Grounds", in which the player usually has to get to the exit of a room with a limited number of items and health points. Players are ranked according to the time it took them to complete the level and any scoring objectives. Scores and other statistics from the main campaign and training group are tracked via online leaderboards. During the 215 Game Awards, a remastered version and port was announced to be released for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
