Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe
Following the success of the simulation titles Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain® and Battlehawks 1942 in the late 1980s, LucasArts decided to follow these games with another World War II simulation title: Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. The game was released in August 1991 and followed the US 8th Air Force's campaign to cripple the German Luftwaffe in the final years of World War II. Players could fly in either American or German fighter planes. The special thing about the game was that many of the playable aircraft were still under development during the war. In other words, the planes were never used in combat, allowing players to explore "what if" possibilities with the game. These possibilities were further expanded through four Tour of Duty expansion packs. Aircraft in these expansions included the P-38 Lighting, a twin-engine escort fighter, and the German Do335, an interceptor with a conventional tractor propeller in the nose and a pusher propeller behind the tail of the aircraft.
