Story
On Mars in 2080, five years after the events of Red Faction, the nanotechnology developed by Axel Capek, the Ultor Corporation's chief scientist before its demise, has become the property of the Earth Defense Force (EDF). With this technology, the EDF begins to restructure the Ultor Corporation, focusing primarily on improved super soldiers and suitable weapons. However, the research Capek has done in his labs has been stolen by other militant groups and various terrorist organizations. This has been going on for years; the research results have often changed hands in the criminal underworld. The player is introduced to his role as an explosives expert (codename "Alias") who goes on a special mission to retrieve the research data for the Republic of the Commonwealth. Eventually, the research data is successfully seized by the elite forces of Victor Sopot, the chancellor of the dystopian military state The Commonwealth. Sopot uses the nanotechnology to bolster his already powerful forces, creating the first super soldiers with the help of the research data. However, fearing the potential of his new super-soldiers, he orders them all hunted down, executed, and replaced with far less intelligent mutant horrors known as "The Processed." Betrayed by their leader, the player's group flees underground and allies with the Red Faction as mercenaries. At this point in the story, the Red Faction is an organized resistance movement that opposes the rule of Sopot and the twisted political principles of the Commonwealth. The group eventually pursues Sopot and eliminates all resistance that stands in its way, while the Red Faction takes the conflict to the streets in a joint uprising against Commonwealth rule. In the early stages of the game, the Red Faction and the troops support each other in accomplishing common goals, such as sabotaging propaganda facilities. The uprising culminates in the success of trapping Sopot in his missile silo and executing him. Alias returns to the temporary base of operations to find that all Red Faction resistance members present have been brutally slaughtered. The leader of the force, Molov, notes that with Sopot dead and nanotech research in his possession, the Commonwealth forces have volunteered to join him. He declares Alias and Tangier, another member of the force, enemies of the state for supporting the Red Faction. Tanger helps Alias escape, and shortly after he makes his escape to safety, Alias helps the surviving members of the Red Faction defend themselves against the enemy. Alias and Echo, another Squad member, meet at a secret location to discuss an alternative strategy to stop Molov, and Echo is killed in a firefight with Quill, a former Squad member. Tangier radios Alias shortly thereafter, and the two agree to take out Molov's seized nanotech lab in the colossal statue of Sopot. Inside the lab, Alias triumphs over Repta, a former squad member, and destroys the nanotech lab's power generators. Alias' explosives weaken the statue's foundation, making it unstable. Alias encounters Repta again and triumphs over him once more, causing the energy field in Repta to reach critical mass. Alias and Tangier meet and pursue Molov, who climbs the statue of Sopot with the nanotech cell - the culmination of Capek's research - waiting to be picked up by Shrike, Molov's subordinate. Shrike betrays his commander, and Tangier succeeds in reclaiming the nanotech cell from Molov's possession. Molov, desperate to take out his enemies, climbs onto a nearby battle tank and launches a furious attack on Alias. Alias uses the destructible environment to his advantage and manages to dodge Molov's fire and launch a counterattack that not only kills Molov, but also destroys the statue. As the statue crumbles, Shrike swoops in with his air support plane to rescue Alias. From this point on, the story ends in one of four possible ways, depending on the player's level of heroism.
