Quest for Glory: Shadows of Darkness
Shadows of Darkness is the fourth Quest for Glory game. It is a journey to the land of Mordavia - a setting influenced by Eastern Europe, especially the Slavic region. The hero had just started enjoying his victory in Tarna when a spell zapped him into an unknown part of the land, without a weapon, items or even a light source. Shortly after finding his way out of the dark cave, the hero meets a mysterious woman named Katrina. He crosses the swamps of the dark forest and finally reaches the city. However, even in the city there is a threatening atmosphere, and the hero cannot relax. He must find out what is going on, why the townspeople are so reluctant and unwilling to help him, and what horrors lurk outside the city walls. Life has never been so dangerous for our hero. He'll soon find out - provided he survives. Like the previous Quest For Glory titles, the game is a combination of puzzle adventure and role-playing game. The player character can be a fighter, a thief, a mage or a paladin. It is also possible to import a character from an earlier part of the series. Again, the hero improves his abilities by using them over and over again (for example, throwing stones at a tree to improve the throwing power that might be needed to solve a puzzle). The combat system has changed a lot in this part. Battles are viewed from a side-scrolling perspective and are action-oriented. The protagonist can move freely, jump and perform attacks and defensive maneuvers, similar to fighting games. In the CD version of the game, conversations and text descriptions are accompanied by the narrator's voice.
