PlanetSide tells about the efforts of three factions fighting for territorial control over ten different continents on the planet Auraxis. Players take on the role of individual soldiers fighting for one of the three factions, and can specialize in a variety of roles, such as a combat vehicle crew member, an infantryman, an invisible infiltrator, or a variety of support roles, such as a medic or an engineer. The game is played primarily in first-person perspective, with the possibility of third-person perspective. Unlike most shooters, in which small battles take place on an instanced map, PlanetSide battles can involve hundreds of players in a single fight. PlanetSide battles are about controlling territory and strategic points, and this can have an effect on all three factions. To date, PlanetSide is one of the few MMOFPS games ever developed. A sequel, PlanetSide 2, was released in November 2012. On January 24, 2014, Sony Online Entertainment announced that the game would be released as a free-to-play version in April 2014. After several delays, the game was officially released as free-to-play on April 29. On July 1, 2016, at 4:00pm PT, the Planetside servers went offline permanently.
