Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium

Story

Phantasy Star IV takes place 1,000 years after the events of Phantasy Star II. After an event known as the Great Collapse, much of the once-thriving planet of Motavia has degenerated into desert, and life for its inhabitants is becoming increasingly difficult. To make matters worse, the number of "biomonsters," a collective term for the strange and violent aberrations of Motavia's flora and fauna, has increased significantly. Keeping these creatures under control is the job of the "hunters." During an investigation of one such outbreak, Chaz Ashley, a young hunter, learns the connection between the biomonster problem and the planet's ecological crisis. The planet is about to return to its original desert state when the climate and biosphere control systems installed over a thousand years ago begin to fail. The reasons for the malfunctions are revealed during the plot and are directly related to the events in Phantasy Star II. Chaz and his allies connect the world's problems to a cult leader named Zio, the "Black Mage," whose goal seems to be the total destruction not only of Motavia, but of the entire Algol solar system. The heroes stop Zio in order to restore the computer systems that maintain Motavia. But it soon becomes clear that Zio is only the vanguard of a much larger enemy long in the past. The secrets of the Algol solar system are revealed as Chaz and company discover both the nature of the threat to their worlds and the safeguards from a long-forgotten time.
