Neverwinter Nights
Neverwinter Nights (NWN) is a third-person role-playing game set in the fantasy world of the Forgotten Realms, with game mechanics based on the rules of Dungeon & Dragons 3rd Edition. The game engine was developed based on an Internet-based model for a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) that allows end users to run game servers. The goal was to create a potentially infinite massively multiplayer game framework. The game was named after the original online game Neverwinter Nights, the very first graphical massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), which ran on AOL from 1991 to 1997.
Story
The story begins with the player character (PC), led by Lady Aribeth, being sent out to find four creatures (Dryad, Devourer of Intellect, Yuan-ti and Cockatrice) known as Waterdhavian creatures, which are needed for the creation of a cure for Woe Death, a plague that plagues the city of Neverwinter and forces a quarantine. With the help of Fenthick Moss, Aribeth's lover, and Desther, Fenthick's friend, the PCs manage to obtain the creatures. While collecting the creatures, they are attacked by mysterious assassins from a cult that is behind the spread of the plague. While the cure is being made, Castle Neverwinter is attacked by the minions of Desther, who betrays the heroes. Desther takes the finished cure and flees the castle, while the PC and Fenthick give chase. When they catch up with Desther, he surrenders after a short fight. Desther is sentenced to be burned at the stake and Fenthick, though ignorant of Desther's true intentions, is sentenced to death by hanging. The PC meets with Aribeth and they set out to find the cult responsible for the plague and the attack on Neverwinter. With the help of Aarin Gend, the spymaster of Neverwinter, the PC finds the journals of the dead cultists and letters from a person named Maugrim, which convince Aribeth that the cult's headquarters are in Luskan. Aribeth sets off for Luskan, and the PC follows her after talking to Gend again. Once in Luskan, the PC hears rumors that Aribeth is joining the cultists. These fears are confirmed when she meets with Maugrim and Morag, the Queen of the Old Ones. They are searching for a group of magical relics, the Words of Power. The PC retrieves all the Words of Power except for one, which is in the hands of the cult. The PC discovers that the words open a portal to a pocket world inside the Source Stone, where Morag and the other Ancients are. The PC confronts Aribeth, and depending on how the meeting goes, she either surrenders to the PC or he is forced to kill her. The PC fights Maugrim for the last word and then uses the words to enter the Source Stone and fight with Morag. After Morag's death, the PC escapes from the stone as the world implodes within it.
