Multi-Users in Middle-earth

MUME, Multi-Users in Middle-earth, is a DikuMUD based on J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth that has been continuously expanded and revised since the fall of 1991. In MUME, players are encouraged to role-play in this carefully crafted world and explore the conflict leading up to the War of the Ring in the late Third Age. The action takes place nearly 100 years before The Hobbit, but long after the loss of the One Ring by Sauron. The Key to Erebor has just been found by Gandalf in Dol Guldur and all the epic stories told in The Lord of the Rings can take place. MUME includes 28,000+ original rooms from the mighty dwarven halls beyond the Gulf of Lhûn in the west to the mountains of Mirkwood in the east, and from the ruins of Fornost Erain in the north to the fortress of Isengard in the south. Players can choose between different races, each of which has some unique characteristics. The races are divided into three striving factions. Dwarves, Elves, Half-Elves, Hobbits and Humans - among them the shape-shifting Beornings - are at eternal war with the Orcs, Trolls and Black Númenóreans. In addition, the orcish tribe of Zaugurz is trying to expand its territory at the expense of the Tarkhnarb orcs of Goblin Gate. Most of these conflicts take place east and south of the city of Bree, but rare raids or individual agents of the Red Eye have made it as far west as the dwarven houses in the Blue Mountains.

Story

MUME has been around for a few years now and has a lot of interesting features. It has thousands of rooms covering the Blue Mountains to the west, the Grey Anfurts, Bree, the Shire, Fornost to the north, Tharbad to the south, Rivendell, the Misty Mountains, Carrock and Lórien to the east. There are other locations such as the dreaded Mines of Moria, the Orcish Caverns, the dark and ancient Old Forest, the Forest of Mirkwood, the mysterious Fangorn Forest and the Troll Warrens. You can meet many interesting people, such as the elves Cirdan, Elrond, Arwen, Celeborn or Galadriel, the leader of the Istari Council Saruman, the nasty trolls Bill, Bert and Tom or you can simply buy a beer in Barliman's famous inn. The mysterious Tom Bombadil sings his songs in the Old Forest, where Old Man Willow put down his roots a long time ago. And deep down in the earth, in the deepest mines of Moria, you may find a horror that was forgotten long ago. You will also meet many others, some of whom you have heard stories about or who are new to you. You can also solve many quests. You can open ancient dwarven tombs or help a poor shopkeeper find something he has lost, defeat fearsome enemies and search for ancient lore. Explore long-forgotten towers and hidden places or simply sit back with a good beer and listen to a story or two told by one of the storytellers. Players can choose between different races, each of which has some unique characteristics. The races are divided into three striving factions. Dwarves, elves, half-elves, hobbits and humans - including the shape-shifting Beornings - are at eternal war with the orcs, trolls and Black Númenóreans. In addition, the Zaugurz orc tribe is trying to expand its territory at the expense of the Tarkhnarb orcs of Goblin Gate. Most of these conflicts take place east and south of the city of Bree, but rare raids or individual agents of the Red Eye have made it as far west as the dwarven houses in the Blue Mountains.
