Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
Punch-Out!!, originally released in North America as Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, is a boxing fighting video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), developed and released by Nintendo in 1987. It is part of the Punch-Out!!! series and is a port of the arcade games Punch-Out!! and Super Punch-Out!! (especially the latter) with some variations. Punch-Out!! is about a boxer named Little Mac who works his way up in the professional boxing scene, competing against a number of colorful fictional boxers. He ends up fighting a real boxer, the heavyweight champion of the world at the time, named Mike Tyson in the original version and Mr. Dream in the later version. Little Mac has a limited repertoire compared to most of his opponents. His punches are limited to left and right jabs, left and right body shots and a powerful uppercut. The uppercut can only be used once the player has earned a star. This is usually done by counter punching the opponent right before or after certain attacks. The player can earn up to three stars. To perform the uppercut, the player must press the start button once he has earned a star. To defend himself, Mac can dodge left or right, duck and block punches by setting up his guard. Little Mac also has a heart meter that drops by three when he is hit by an opponent, and by one when he blocks an attack or an opponent blocks/dodges the player's attack. When the heart gauge drops to zero, Little Mac temporarily turns pink and appears exhausted. The player can then no longer attack, but can still dodge or block. At this point, Mac can only regain some hearts (and his normal color palette) if he dodges the opponent's blows. If he is knocked down, he immediately loses all hearts, but can regain some if he gets up. A fight can end by knockout (KO) if a fighter is unable to get up within ten seconds of being knocked down; by technical knockout (TKO) if a fighter is knocked down three times in one round; or by decision if the fight lasts three full rounds without a clear winner. To win by decision, the player must reach a certain score by punching and/or knocking down the opponent (different boxers need different scores to win by decision). However, some fights cannot be won this way and automatically end in defeat for the player if the opponent is not knocked out. Mac can only get up three times during a fight; if he is knocked down a fourth time, he cannot get up again and loses by knockout. If Mac loses his first fight to a ranked opponent, he has a chance to fight a rematch. However, if he loses a title fight, he drops in the rankings - one spot for the Minor or Major Circuit, two spots for the World Circuit. If he loses a rematch, he drops one place (unless he is already at the end of his Circuit) and must fight his way back up. A third defeat (not necessarily one in a row) ends the game. The exception is the last fight against Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream; a loss against them automatically leads to a Game Over.
