Story
The story of Metal Slug begins at the dawn of the era of modern terrorism in the near future of 2028. There are two militant factions fighting for power: the Rebellion and the Regular Army. The regular army is a well-equipped, modern force led by various nations around the world. The rebellion is made up of various small, organized militant groups, from terrorists to splinter groups of armed forces driven by their hunger for power. The regular army is a very formidable force. However, it is not very effective due to widespread corruption within the chain of command. Other officials often deny the reports and recommendations they receive from intelligence officers. This often leads to intelligence failures that have dramatic consequences. Vice Admiral Donald Morden of the Regular Army Marine Corps is one of the main characters who triggers the events of Metal Slug. He has a reputation for being a tough, efficient and caring Regular Army officer and is held in high regard by his troops. He is also a caring father to his son. However, when his son is killed in the Central Park bombing, which is blamed on a failure of the regular army's intelligence service, Morden immediately switches to the rebellion. He promotes himself to general. In 2026, one year after the attempted assassination of the President of the United States by the Rebellion under the command of General Donald Morden, the Rebellion launched a massive attack against Regular Army forces around the world. Although Regular Army intelligence had many indications that such an attack was imminent, Regular Army officials again ignored the warnings. The rebellion took the Regular forces by surprise and almost completely annihilated them thanks to their numerical superiority and new technologies.
