Metal Gear

Metal Gear

Metal Gear is considered the forefather of the stealth game genre and was also the first video game to be developed by Hideo Kojima, who also directed many later Metal Gear sequels. The game revolves around a special forces operative codenamed Solid Snake who embarks on a solo infiltration mission into the fortified state of Outer Heaven to destroy the Metal Gear, a bipedal walking tank capable of launching nuclear missiles from anywhere in the world. The player must navigate the main character, a military man codenamed Solid Snake, through various locations while avoiding visual contact and direct confrontation with patrolling guards. If the player is spotted, the game switches to "alert mode". In this situation, Snake must escape from the enemy's field of vision in order to continue the infiltration. The method of escape varies depending on the circumstances of discovery: If Snake is spotted and only a single exclamation point appears over an enemy's head, only the enemies in the player's current screen will attack and Snake can escape by simply moving to an adjacent screen. However, if two exclamation marks appear over the enemy (or the player triggers an alarm by being detected by a camera or infrared sensor or using an undisarmed weapon), reinforcements will also appear from off-screen. Snake can only escape by taking out all incoming enemies, going outside or entering an elevator. The player starts the game unarmed, but over time acquires firearms such as a Beretta 92F and an M79 grenade launcher, as well as explosives such as remote-controlled rockets and landmines. Ammunition and supplies for the weapons are limited, but are replenished by picking up ammunition caches or additional supplies. Weapons can be used not only to kill enemies, but also to clear obstacles such as hollow walls and electrified floors. Snake can also use his fists to strike and defeat patrolling enemies. If the player defeats a guard with punches without alerting anyone, the defeated guard will occasionally drop a unit of rations or an ammo crate that can be picked up. In addition to the enemy guards, the player is also confronted with mercenaries who challenge the player to battle and serve as boss characters. The enemy base consists of three different buildings with several floors (including basements). The player uses key cards and other items to unlock doors and explore new areas. Each door can only be opened with the corresponding key card. Information is obtained by freeing the hostages in the buildings. After rescuing five hostages, the player's rank increases by one star (the maximum rank is four stars), which enables a higher carrying capacity and maximum health. However, if a hostage is killed, the player is downgraded to the previous rank. A radio allows the player to communicate with their commanding officer, Big Boss, or one of the resistance members operating undercover near Outer Heaven (Schneider, Diane and Jennifer). Each of Snake's allies specializes in a specific topic. The player must memorize the frequency numbers of his allies in order to contact them. All radio transmissions depend on the rooms the player is in.

Story

Towards the end of the 20th century, the West discovers that a weapon of mass destruction is being built inside Outer Heaven, a fortified state founded by a "legendary mercenary" 200 km north of Galzburg, South Africa. Special Forces unit FOXHOUND sends its top agent Gray Fox to penetrate the fortress, assess the situation and neutralize the threat. A few days later, FOXHOUND loses contact with Gray Fox. His last radio message was "METAL GEAR...." To find out what happened to Gray Fox, FOXHOUND commander Big Boss sends his newest recruit, Solid Snake, into the area in an operation code-named Intrude N313. Once in Outer Heaven, Snake makes contact with local resistance members Schneider, Diane and Jennifer. With all his skills and the equipment he obtains on the spot, he manages to rescue Fox. Fox explains that Metal Gear is the code name of a nuclear weapons-equipped, bipedal, walking tank that can engage in all types of combat and fire nuclear weapons from any location. Outer Heaven plans to use the Metal Gear to assert itself as the new world superpower. To destroy the Metal Gear and overthrow Outer Heaven's mercenaries, Snake rescues leading Metal Gear engineer Dr. Pettrovich Madnar and his daughter Ellen. The scientist explains how to destroy the Metal Gear, and Snake takes on the forces of Outer Heaven. However, he realizes that the traps set in his way are too precise, and wonders how the information about his activities is being tracked. Big Boss starts acting strangely and eventually asks Snake to abort the mission (breaking the fourth wall by asking the player to turn off the console). Also, Schneider gets ambushed by enemies and is presumed dead after losing contact with Snake. Snake infiltrates the main Outer Heaven base and takes out the Metal Gear before he can complete the mission. When he escapes safely from the basement of the compound, he is confronted by the leader of Outer Heaven's mercenaries, who turns out to be Big Boss. The corrupt leader reveals that he used his connections to steal military information, build his own mercenary force, and fund his activities. His goal was to make Outer Heaven the world's greatest superpower, capable of bringing even the West to its knees. He had the rookie Snake infiltrated, hoping to capture him and provide the authorities with misinformation, but he had clearly underestimated Snake's abilities. After losing the Metal Gear and most of his troops, Big Boss seemingly starts the self-destruct sequence of the compound, promising that he will not die alone, but Snake will join him. Snake defeats Big Boss in a final battle and escapes the Outer Heaven compound as it bursts into flames behind him. After the credits, a message from Big Boss appears, saying that he will see Solid Snake again.
