MediEvil

MediEvil is an action-adventure game developed by SCE Cambridge Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The game was originally released in 1998 for the PlayStation and is about Sir Daniel Fortesque, a skeleton knight who was accidentally resurrected to fight the wizard Zarok and save the kingdom of Gallowmere. The game spans a variety of levels, many of which require specific tasks to progress. Sir Daniel Fortesque can use a variety of weapons, from melee weapons such as swords and clubs to ranged weapons such as crossbows. Many of these weapons can be charged up for a powerful attack and some weapons, such as the mace, can be used to reach areas that are otherwise inaccessible. If he has no items, Dan can rip off his arm and use it for both melee and ranged attacks. Dan can also carry a shield alongside his weapons to defend himself against attacks; however, they can only take several hits before breaking. During the course of the game, Dan can visit two types of gargoyle heads: The green ones offer him information, while at the blue ones he can buy services or ammunition with the treasures he finds. Dan's health is determined by a single health bar, which decreases when Dan is hit. It is completely depleted if Dan drowns or falls from a great height. If Dan runs out of health, the game is over. Dan can extend his maximum health by collecting life bottles, which automatically refill his health bar when it drops to zero. There are also Life Vials and Life Fountains hidden throughout the game that can replenish Dan's health and fill up empty Life Vials that Dan has. There is a hidden chalice of souls in each level, which can be collected if the player fills it with enough souls from defeated enemies (some chalices are also available in other ways). When the player completes a level with a chalice in hand, Dan is warped to the Hall of Heroes, where he can talk to a legendary hero who will give him rewards, such as weapons. When the player completes the game with all the chalices, the true ending of the game is revealed.
Story
In 1286, an evil sorcerer named Zarok plotted to take over the kingdom of Gallowmere with his undead army. Legend has it that Sir Daniel Fortesque, the hero of the King of Gallowmere, led his army to victory and killed Zarok before succumbing to his mortal wounds. In reality, however, Dan was hit by the first arrow fired in the battle, and the king decided to cover it up and declare Dan the "Hero of Gallowmere." Zarok, meanwhile, had to go into hiding and was presumed dead. 100 years later, in 1386, Zarok reappears and casts a spell over Gallowmere to awaken his undead army and steal the souls of the living. In the process, however, he unwittingly reawakens the corpse of Dan, who has become a skeleton over time, missing the jaw and eye he lost at the Battle of Gallowmere. Unable to ascend to the Hall of Heroes due to his failure in life, Dan uses this opportunity to defeat Zarok, save Gallowmere and earn his place as a true hero. On his journey through Gallowmere, he fights his way through Zarok's hordes and encounters all sorts of beasts. Soon he reaches Zarok's lair and fights his skeleton warriors with the souls of his old allies, obtained by collecting the chalices. After also defeating Zarok's champion, Lord Kardok, Zarok transforms into a powerful monster, but Dan manages to defeat him. When Zarok uses his last breath to bring down his cave, Dan escapes and Zarok's magical hold on the land is thwarted, restoring the souls of the living and restoring the dead. As the magic cast on him also wears off, Dan returns to his burial chamber, where he once again falls into eternal slumber. When the player has succeeded in collecting all the goblets, Dan ascends to the Hall of Heroes, where he is hailed as the rightful Hero of Gallowmere.
