Magic Pengel: The Quest for Color
At the center of Magic Pengel is the player, who can manipulate a "pengel" (which looks like a stylized fairy combined with a paintbrush) to create a creature or "doodle." Using the pengel (pronounced "pen-jell") as a cursor, the player simply sketches the limbs, body and other features. Depending on the amount of magic ink used and the type of body parts, the creature will receive certain statistics and be created. With the help of Zoe and Taro, the character trains and fights with self-created designs that can be swapped or fought with other players' creations. As the battle progresses, the doodles become stronger and earn points for buying pre-made doodles and additional abilities for their own creation. Combat works through three choices: Attack, Magic and Block, as well as an attack command. The three basic maneuvers follow a standard rock-paper-scissors method, but the different properties of the doodles and the impossibility of repeating one selection after another minimize repetition.
Story
The story begins with you (the main character - this character is never shown or given a default name to maintain the 'second-person' feel of the game, but it is implied that the unseen figure is a young man) waking up in a man's garden and seeing a pengel. A mysterious voice tells you that you can use the pengel to draw whatever you want, and that the shape will be your companion on your quest. You draw a simple shape to become your first doodle, but the doodle falls off a cliff and is rescued by a girl. Then it runs away. After the girl lectures you, she introduces herself as Zoe and then her (foster) brother Taro. She takes you to the arena where a tournament is taking place and teaches you how to duel. You win and Zoe gets angry with the kingdom's guards because they took some of the colors you won as tax. It turns out that the king who rules over the humans is corrupt and is trying to force pure-hearted humans to draw doodles to work for him. One of his best doodlers, Galileo (Zoe and Taro's father), has disappeared and the king is trying to get revenge by taking Zoe and Taro's home away from them. Zoe and Taro don't know where Galileo has gone and search for their father by throwing banknotes in a bottle into the sea. You must compete in tournaments to get the money Zoe and Taro need to pay off the mortgage on their homeland, help them find their father and finally defeat the Doodle King himself.
