Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge
The first in a series of 3 racing games supported by the legendary car company now owned by Proton. The game features a total of 32 fictional race tracks from around the world, divided into 3 difficulty levels. There are 19 computer opponents (15 in the 8-bit versions) and you must finish in the top 10 (top 8 in the 8-bit versions) to progress. The better you do in a race, the further back you start on the grid in the next race. The opposing drivers have puns based on the F1 drivers of the time - for example Ricardo Pastry and Crashhard Banger. You can choose between sound effects and a variety of music tracks. The game offers a simultaneous 2-player mode, but the 1-player mode only uses half the screen, with a simple animation filling the other half. In most races, you have to make a pit stop to refuel in order to reach the finish line. There are obstacles on the tracks such as oil slicks, roadworks, boulders and rivers - if you come into contact with these (or other cars) you'll slow down, but there's no damage model for your car.
