Lost Planet: Extreme Condition
The game is played from the third person in the shoulder perspective. Players can switch between first and third person at any time. Players are either on foot or riding on different types of mechanized suits, called Vital Suits (VS). VSs carry heavy weapons such as chainguns and rocket launchers. They can pick up weapons lying on the ground and fire multiple weapons simultaneously. On foot, players can use a grappling hook to pull themselves up to hard-to-reach places or attach themselves to a VS and kidnap it. Driving VS and using certain weapons require thermal energy. In addition, the cold temperature of the planet causes the characters' thermal energy to constantly decrease. Players can replenish their thermal energy level by defeating enemies or activating data posts. The data posts also allow players to use their navigation radar to see incoming enemies. Each of the 11 levels is accompanied by a boss, which can be either a VS or a large Akrid.
Story
Lost Planet is set in the year known in the game as T.C. -80, on the fictional planet E.D.N.. III. After Earth has become too hostile for humans to live on due to wars, global warming and pollution, a fictional interstellar megacorporation called Neo-Venus Construction (NEVEC) plans to colonize E.D.N. III, a new Earth-like planet ravaged by a brutal ice age. NEVEC discovers that E.D.N. III is inhabited by an aggressive and territorial insectoid alien species called Akrid, which come in all shapes and sizes and generate their own valuable thermal energy. Set 150 years after a great war in which humans lost to the Akrid, the plot of the game revolves around Wayne Holden, a soldier trying to overthrow the NEVEC, who are still fighting for control of E.D.N. III, and to support the colonization efforts for the rest of the human race, destroying the Akrid while trying to survive both treachery and the planet's extreme conditions. The game begins with Wayne, his father Gale and their unit going on a mission to kill a giant Akrid known as Green Eye. During the mission, Wayne gets separated from his unit and has to watch his father's VS explode. Wayne is left floating in the snow and is frozen for 30 years. Wayne wakes up to find himself in the care of Yuri Solotov and his crew of snow pirates, Luka and Rick. Aside from his name and the Green Eye, Wayne can't remember anything from his previous life. Yuri is particularly interested in the thermal extension (or harmonizer) attached to Wayne's arm that has allowed Wayne to survive all this time. Yuri tells Wayne that NEVEC is working on a project to thaw the planet to make it safe. Wayne joins Yuri's gang and fights a woman named Basil on a mission to wipe out an Akrid swarm. Basil tells him that Juri killed her husband and that she was out for revenge. At the same time, Juri mysteriously disappears, making Wayne doubt his loyalty. With the help of Rick and Luka, Wayne finds the location of the Green Eye and destroys it with Gale's (his father's) VS. Shortly after, Wayne and his VS are attacked by Bandero, the field commander of the NEVEC. After escaping the attack, Wayne slowly remembers that Green Eye wasn't responsible for killing Gale, but a couple of NEVEC soldiers who were being watched by Bendero. Wayne and Luka narrowly escape to find that their pirate fortress (trailer) has been besieged and Rick has been captured. Over the next year, Wayne and Luka launch attacks on the NEVEC, which has taken control of the humans. During one of their attacks, they discover that Rick is still alive because he was rescued by Basil. Basil and Wayne take a NEVEC soldier named Joe hostage. After capturing Joe, Basil explains that the Harmonizer slows the aging process and releases the powers of Gale's VS. After interrogating him, they learn more about NEVEC's Frontier project. Joe tells them that NEVEC plans to make E.D.N. III into a safe place for humans. After joining the Snow Pirates, Joe arranges for Wayne to meet with NEVEC leadership, which inadvertently leads to an ambush where Bandero shoots Wayne in the leg. During the confrontation, Wayne and Joe learn that Project T-ENG will be deployed to not only exterminate all Akrid, but also kill all humans remaining on the surface, while all of NEVEC watches safely from the sky. Horrified, the pirates embark on one last mission to stop the project. Wayne confronts Bandero one last time, kills him, and gets his father's rebuilt VS back. Wayne finds Juri and before he dies under torture, Juri gives Wayne an attachment for his Harmonizer that will allow him to unlock the true power of his VS. As Wayne begins his attack on NEVEC's boss, Commander Isenberg, Basil sacrifices himself to buy him time and Joe detonates explosives to destroy the elevator where NEVEC would be hiding. Wayne confronts Isenberg and shoots him in the head with a single pistol bullet after a fight in VSs before passing out and losing his memory again. Wayne wakes up to see that Luka and Rick have begun melting the ice and snow on the planet, and colonization is slowly beginning again.
