Lost Odyssey

Lost Odyssey is set in a world where a "magic-industrial revolution" is taking place. While magical energy was already present in all living beings before, thirty years before the game begins, it suddenly became much more powerful. This has had a major impact on society: devices called "magic engines" harness this energy for lighting, cars, communications, and robots, among other things. While in the past only a few people could perform magic, now many magicians have gained this ability. However, this progress has also led to two nations developing new and more powerful weapons of mass destruction. The Kingdom of Gohtza and the Republic of Uhra (which recently emerged from a monarchy). Uhra is building the Great Staff, a gigantic magical machine, while the heavily industrialized Gohtza is itself actively pursuing magical research. A third nation, the Free Ocean State of Numara, remains isolated and neutral, though it is thrown into disarray by a general's attempt at a coup d'état. Uhra, at war with Khent, a nation of beasts, sends its forces to the Highlands of Wohl at the beginning of the game to fight a decisive battle.
