Legend of Mana
Although Legend of Mana includes elements from the three previous games, it has its very own game style. Most importantly, the player can shape the game world Fa'Diel to his/her liking, with the help of "artifacts" that he/she gets during the game. The player uses the artifacts to explore different cities, dungeons, etc., called "lands". This creates a non-linear gameplay, as the game is driven by a series of side quests that would be considered side quests in other games. In Legend of Mana there are three different storylines that can run simultaneously and don't necessarily have to be completed for the player to finish the game. Legend of Mana was a financial success in Japan. While the game received much praise for its graphics and presentation, many critics and fans were disappointed by the game's lack of a main storyline.
Story
Legend of Mana is set in the fictional world of Fa'Diel. Nine centuries before the events of the game, the Mana Tree that gave mana and life to the world burned down. As a result, a war broke out between fairies, humans, and others who fought over the scarce power of mana that was left. When the war ended, the depleted mana tree went dormant and the many lands of the world were stored in ancient artifacts. A hero, controlled by the player, has the task of restoring the world and its mana. The lands of Fa'Diel are populated by a variety of different creatures, including humans, fairies, demons, the jewel-loving race of Jumi, plant-like Sproutlings and Flowerlings, mining bears called Dudbears, and shadowy creatures of the underworld known as Shadoles. Fa'Diel is also home to a variety of anthropomorphic animals and items, as well as monsters from other Mana titles such as Rabites, Chobin Hoods and Goblins.
