Story

An official translation of SNK's story is as follows: "Since ancient times, there have been two worlds.... The world of the living, Ushyo, and the land of the dead, Tokoyo. A legendary border, the Gates of Hell, has separated them since the origin of myths to maintain universal balance. There are said to be four gods who defend it: Seiryu from the east, Byakko from the west, Genbu from the north and Suzaku from the south. They fulfill their task forever from the shadows of legend and were eventually forgotten by people over time. Now it is the "Bakumatsu". When the Tokugawa shogunate ruled for 200 years, the samurai on the edge of the Heian period had long since ceased to be battle-hardened. The people, long accustomed to peace, encounter intriguing strangers and wonder at the narrowness of their isolation. To add to the confusion, a sudden riot occurs. A natural disaster unprecedented in the history of Japan begins. It has been rumored to be the Majin Revival, a time when the gods will once again walk the land and inflict divine punishment. In a land where there was supposedly no chaos, people could do nothing but watch and despair. However, it was said that there are people who do not do that. People who had not lost their fighting spirit and stood up to the chaos. Those who wanted to find the real cause behind the unrest and end it. Also, people who were unexpectedly born in the center of chaos. Those who had the ambition to control the threat, and those who are said to be the cause of the Majin Revival. Without speculating on their cause, they are brought together by a heavy fate as their battle begins." The passageway to the Land of the Dead, the Gates of Hell previously guarded by the Four Sacred Beasts, appears to be open. But once the gods are wrapped in human flesh, chaos descends upon the land, also known as the Majin Revival. The series' story focuses on how certain characters decide to confront this conflict, and portrays how each of them is drawn into the same strand of destiny.
