Katamari Damacy
The king of the cosmos has accidentally destroyed the stars and wants the prince to restore them. Unfortunately, the prince is a little less than half a meter tall, so restoring the stars will require some effort. This is where the Katamari comes in, a ball that the Prince can push through our world to roll up items that will increase the Katamari's size until it is suitable for the King. In stylized versions of Japanese houses, cities and environments, the prince pushes the katamari around and collects items that stick to it. At first, the prince can only pick up smaller items, but as the katamari grows, he can collect more. Pins and paper clips stick to the katamari and make it bigger, so it can roll over obstacles and pick up larger items. Over many levels, the Katamari can eventually pick up people, cars, and other larger objects. The player controls the Katamari from a third-person perspective using the PS2's analog sticks. A tutorial guides the player through the controls and story, and introduces a side story about a Japanese girl who can sense the cosmos. To challenge the prince, the king sets requirements for the size of the katamari and sets time limits for the level. Bonus missions restore constellations and have their own limitations. The world of Katamari Damacy is brought to life with fancy animations and a catchy soundtrack. Players can find hidden gifts in the levels that contain accessories for the prince. Two players can also compete against each other in a Katamari competition.
Story
The play begins with a scene in which the king destroys all the stars and the moon. The next day, the king talks to the prince about what happened the night before, about how he felt one with the cosmos, and that it was a beautiful symphony of destruction when he destroyed the stars. In the Japanese version of the game, the king openly admits that he was drunk at the time, while the English version only hints at it. He then instructs the prince to bring back the stars by rolling up objects in the katamari, hopefully before anyone notices.
