Journey
A third-person adventure game in which the player, controlling a robed character, makes a pilgrimage through a desert landscape to a craggy mountain with a beacon in the distance, while uncovering the history of his/her people, rescuing and cooperating with friendly creatures, evading predatory creatures, and communicating with other travelers.
Story
The story of Journey is wordlessly told through in-game cutscenes and pre-rendered scenes. The player's character begins on a sand dune in a seemingly endless desert. In the distance rises a large, ominous-looking mountain with a glowing fissure splitting its peak. As the character approaches the mountain, he finds the remains of a once-thriving civilization that has been eroded by the sand over time. Stones are scattered in the ruins at the end of each area, where the traveler rests. These give him the vision of encountering a larger, white-robed figure in a circular room, with artwork on the walls describing the rise and fall of civilization and reflecting the player's journey. The player progresses deeper and deeper into the remains of a once sprawling city at the base of the mountain. After safely reaching the mountain, he begins to climb it, struggling with the cold climate, deep snow and strong winds. When the crevice is still a good distance away, the traveler falls and collapses in the snow. Six of the white-robed figures appear and give the traveler new energy, allowing the player to reach the top of the mountain and walk into and through the crevice as the screen fills with white. Then the player is shown the credits of the game, which run over the ending sequence. In this movie, a shooting star is shown rising from the crevice and following the traveler's path through the ruins as other robed travelers head toward the mountain. Finally, the shooting star comes to a stop at the sand dune where the game began, and the player has the option to start the game again. At the end of the credits, the player is shown the PlayStation Network IDs of the other travelers who have been part of the journey.
