Ingress
Ingress is an augmented reality massively multiplayer online role-playing GPS-dependent game developed by Niantic Labs, a Google startup, originally for Android devices and since July 14, 2014 for Apple's iOS. The game has a complex science fiction backstory with an ongoing open narrative. The game consists of building "portals" in places of public art, landmarks, monuments, etc., and connecting them to create virtual triangular fields over geographical areas. Game progress is measured by the number of "mind units" (MUs), i.e., people nominally controlled by each faction (as shown on the Intel Map). The required connections between portals can range from feet/meters to miles/kilometers or hundreds of miles/kilometers for operations of significant logistical complexity. International connections and fields are not uncommon, as Ingress has an enthusiastic following among young and old in cities around the world, to the point that the game itself is a lifestyle for some, including tattoos.
