Herzog Zwei

Herzog Zwei

Duke Two is a Sega Genesis-exclusive game from Technosoft, released in 1989 (in North America and Europe in early 1990). It is an early real-time strategy game that preceded the genre popularizer Dune II. Herzog Zwei combines the arcade style of Technosoft's Thunder Force series with a simple, easy to grasp strategy level. In Herzog Zwei, the player directly controls a flying, transforming mech, a multi-role robot that can be used for both mission and combat. Using the mech, the player buys combat units on the surface, flies them across the battlefield and gives them orders. These command activities can only be carried out via the mech. The vehicles follow the orders assigned to them (which are quite simple: patrol, garrison, capture base) until they either run out of fuel or are destroyed. Tactical realignment (reassignment of orders, vehicle repair) requires a high degree of micromanagement due to the required involvement of the mech.
