Hero's Quest: So You Want to Be a Hero
The small town of Spielburg is populated mainly by beer-drinking people and some centaurs who like to work in the fields. Spielburg is surrounded by forests and mountains, where all sorts of strange creatures dwell: ogres, goblins, talking foxes, silly wizards and others. Lately, Spielburg has been attacked by robbers; moreover, the witch Baba Yaga is not to be trusted. The town has everything it needs - even a thieves' guild - except a strong, brave hero to protect it. When a wandering adventurer enters the town, he quickly realizes that his skills could be of use. Hero's Quest: So You Want to Be a Hero is a hybrid game that includes role-playing and adventure elements. Visually, it resembles other quest titles from Sierra (such as Space Quest), but the gameplay includes combat and character development, in addition to the usual exploration, conversations with characters and solving occasional puzzles using inventory items. At the beginning of the game, the player chooses a character class for the protagonist - either a fighter, a mage or a thief. The choice of class affects not only combat, but also many other events in the game. Depending on the class and the number of ability points in different categories, puzzles can be solved differently. The main character's skills and abilities are directly increased by repeatedly performing appropriate actions, such as fighting enemies, exercising, climbing, throwing objects, etc. Many of these activities must be performed to successfully complete the game. Combat takes the player to a separate screen (represented by the image of the opponent) and involves the timed selection of commands such as attack, parry, etc. Interaction with the game world is done by typing word commands or talking. The game has a day/night cycle that includes character schedules. The main character can get hungry and tired, so it is important to feed and rest him.
