Haunted House
Haunted House is an Atari 2600 video game written by James Andreasen and published by Atari, Inc. in February 1982. The player, represented by a pair of eyes, must navigate the haunted mansion of the deceased Zachary Graves in order to find the three pieces of an urn. The game is considered one of the earliest examples of the survival horror genre.
Story
Three pieces of a magical urn are hidden in a haunted house, and your goal is to enter the house and find all three pieces before you lose your nine lives! The game is played from a bird's eye view, where you only see your eyeballs as you explore the four floors of the maze-like mansion. To make your task even more difficult, it is teeming with various creatures. Tarantulas, giant vampire bats and a fast-moving ghost will make sure you lose a life if you get too close to them. To protect yourself from the creatures, you can find a magical sceptre in the villa that makes you immune to the inhabitants. The mansion has many doors, some of which may be locked. To explore all the rooms, you must first find the master key, which is hidden somewhere. The manor house is very dark and you cannot see any objects in it (and in more difficult game variants you cannot see the walls either). To reveal the objects and the walls of the house, you need to light one of your unlimited matches, which will illuminate a small area around you. But don't be surprised if a fast wind or a passing creature blows out your match! You can only carry one item at a time, so you'll need to devise a strategy for exploring the castle; to open a door or move a piece of the urn, you'll need to put down the sceptre. You win the game when all three pieces of the urn are put together and you make it out of the house. The game remembers how many matches you have used in your mission. The fewer matches you use, the better your score.
