Grandia II
The story centers on Ryudo the geo-dog (a kind of mercenary) and his talking bird Skye. Together they accept an assignment from the church of the city of Carbo as bodyguards for Elena, a singer from Granas, who is on her way to the Tower of Garmia. After an incident in the tower, the assignment turns into much more and Ryudo and Elena travel all over the world, meeting new friends and new enemies.
Story
Ryudo is a mercenary known as Geohound, and is hired by the Church of Granas to accompany Elena, a singer from Granas, to the Garmia Tower for a ceremony. Upon his arrival, he is asked to wait while they perform the ritual. But then he hears a scream and rushes to the top floor. When he sees that everyone is dead and Elena has a pair of wings, he rescues her and they both return to Carbo village. Back in the village, Ryudo is asked by the priest to accompany Elena to the Papal State of St. Heim to ask Pope Zera to release Elena from the Wings of Valmar, one of several pieces of Valmar they now possess. Before he can refuse the order, the village is attacked by a mysterious winged woman who attacks and defeats Ryudo in battle. She introduces herself as Millennia and disappears. The next morning, Ryudo accepts the mission and sets off for St. Heim with Elena. In the town of Agear, Millennia reappears, this time more friendly, and joins forces with Ryudo. She inadvertently reveals that she is the wing of Valmar and takes possession of Elena, sharing her body as a separate being. The group, eventually joined by Roan and the beastman Mareg, encounters more parts of Valmar, which Millenia absorbs after defeating her. When the group arrives at the Papal State of St. Heim, Elena meets Pope Zera, who wants to speak with Ryudo. The Pope asks him to find the legendary Granasaber, a weapon that Granas used to defeat Valmar. Ryudo reluctantly agrees and the group travels to Cyrum, Roan's hometown. Once there, the group rests at the inn while Roan departs. The next morning, it turns out that Roan is the prince and that the people of Cyrum once supported Valmar in the ancient war against Granas. The party enters the castle and finds the Gate of Darkness open and discovers an old factory under the castle. Inside the castle, they encounter Valmar's claws and later Melfice. Melfice is Ryudo's brother and the man Mareg is looking for. After defeating the group in battle, he flees and tells Ryudo to face him at home. Roan is crowned king and decides to stay in Cyrum to encourage the people that the past does not predict their future. Tio, the claw-possessed creature and an Automata, joins the group after being rescued. The group reaches the village of Garlan, Ryudo's hometown, by boat, and Ryudo is immediately chastised for returning and told to leave. He reveals that Melfice has returned and he wants to kill him to end his torment on earth. At the inn, a disguised Skye reveals Ryudo's story to Elena. Garlan used to be a village of swordsmen, of whom Melfice was the best. But one night, during a storm, the idol in the hills became restless and the villagers sent Reena, Melfice's betrothed, to pray at the altar. When she did not return, Melfice made inquiries and was secretly followed by Ryudo. At the shrine, Ryudo witnessed Melfice murder Reena. Later, Ryudo fled the town and stayed away for three years, leading the villagers to believe that he had abandoned them, which is why they despise him. In the morning, the group travels to the mountain to face Melfice. At the summit, they defeat Melfice, who then reconciles with Ryudo and informs the group of the Granasaber's location before he dies. As Ryudo mourns, the horns take possession of him, causing him to lose consciousness. Back at the inn, Elena asks Millenia for help, but she initially refuses. However, she relents and uses her powers to seal the horns into Ryudo, who then awakens with a new sense of life. But Elena questions Granas, because it was Valmar who saved Ryudo. The group travels to Nannan, Mareg's hometown, near where the Granas sword was found. In the village, Mareg is praised for his successful mission and the group learns where the Granas Sword is located: in a huge whirlwind to the east. The party travels there and deactivates the artificial storm, revealing the Granasaber. However, Selene, the High Priestess, appears and sacrifices a Domritter to revive Valmar's body around the Granasaber, but the group enters the body and destroys it. Tio reveals the Granasaber to be a ship, teleports the party inside, and guides the giant sword back to St. Heim. The "Day of Darkness" dawns, and the group witnesses the Dom Knights slaughtering the townspeople and destroying the Knights. Elena reveals her true mission: to absorb the pieces of Valmar so they can be destroyed by the Granasaber. In the cathedral, Selene transforms into the heart of Valmar and the group destroys it. They meet Zera, who reveals to them the truth: that Valmar was victorious in the battle against Granas, who was killed. He declares that he wants to revive Valmar with the help of Elena, and kidnaps her to Valmar's moon. The group uses the Granas sword to reach the moon and rescue Elena. A wounded Mareg later sacrifices himself so that the group can escape from the moon. The party crashes near Cyrum, now besieged by monsters from the moon, and reunites with Roan
