God of War: Betrayal

God of War: Betrayal

Betrayal is the only installment in the series not released for the PlayStation and is presented as a 2D sidescrolling game. Despite the limitations of the mobile platform, it retains the action-oriented approach of its predecessors compared to its home console counterparts, with the same combination of combo-based combat, platforming and puzzle elements. Although God of War is primarily a home console series, Betrayal has been praised for its fidelity to the series in terms of gameplay, art style and graphics: "the true, third game in the killer franchise". It received awards for "Wireless Game of the Month" (June 2007) and "Best Platform Game" (Wireless) of 2007.

Story

Following the events of God of War, Kratos leads his Spartan army against Greece. As he fights alongside his warriors, he is attacked by a series of beasts led by the giant Argos, sent by Hera to end the war Kratos is waging. But before Kratos can kill the beast, he is killed by an unknown assassin to destroy the anti-hero's reputation with the gods of Olympus. Kratos pursues him through Greece to discover the identity of the assassin's master, who is trying to turn the gods against him. However, he is stopped by an attack from Hades' henchmen. Soon after, Ceryx, the son of Hermes, is sent to deliver a message to Kratos from Zeus, who is becoming increasingly concerned about the extent of the destruction Kratos has left in his wake. Ceryx confronts Kratos, but the god of war refuses to stop and engages the messenger in a fight. The assassin takes advantage of the situation and escapes. The game ends with Kratos killing Ceryx and the Spartan soldiers celebrating, but as he looks upon the body of the dead god, he realizes that Zeus would eventually take action for this act of defiance.
