Fallout 3

Fallout 3

Fallout 3, from the creators of the award-winning Oblivion, offers one of the best-realized game worlds of all time. Create any kind of character you want and explore the open desert of post-apocalyptic Washington D.C. Every minute is a fight for survival as you encounter super mutants, ghouls, raiders and other wasteland dangers. Prepare for the future. Fallout 3, the third game in the Fallout series, is a single-player action role-playing game (RPG) set in a post-apocalyptic Washington DC. Combining the horrific insanity of the Cold War-era theory of mutually assured destruction with the campy naivety of 1950s American nuclear propaganda, Fallout 3 will delight both gamers familiar with the first two games in the series and those playing the series for the first time.

Story

In the introductory sequence, the player meets his character's father James, a doctor and scientist in Vault 101. James makes frequent comments about the player's deceased mother, Catherine, and her favorite Bible passage, Revelation 21:6, which speaks of "the water of life." The main quest begins after the player is forced to escape from Vault 101 when James leaves the vault, causing anarchy and prompting the paranoid warden to send his security forces after the player. The search for James leads the character on a journey through the wasteland, first to the nearby town of Megaton, named for the unexploded nuclear bomb in the center of the city, then to the radio station Galaxy News Radio, whose enthusiastic DJ Three Dog nicknames the player "The Lone Wanderer." The player travels to Rivet City, a discarded aircraft carrier that now serves as a fortified human settlement. Here the player meets Doctor Li, a scientist who worked with the player's father. Doctor Li informs the player about Project Purity, a plan by Catherine and James to purify all the water in the Tidal Basin and eventually the entire Potomac River with a giant water purifier being built at the Jefferson Memorial. However, continued delays and Catherine's death in childbirth ended the project and James took the character as a newborn to raise in the safety of Vault 101. After investigating the Jefferson Memorial, the lone wanderer tracks James down in Vault 112 and frees him from a virtual reality program run by the Vault's sadistic overseer, Dr. Braun. James and the player return to Rivet City and James reveals that he asked Braun for information about the Garden of Eden Creation Kit (G.E.C.K.), a device that contains the components needed to activate Project Purity. James and Dr. Li lead a team of scientists from Rivet City to the memorial site to get the project back online, but the memorial site is invaded by the Enclave, a powerful military organization made up of the remnants of the pre-war United States government. James floods the project's control room with radiation to prevent Enclave leader Colonel Augustus Autumn from taking control, and kills himself (Autumn survives, however). The Lone Wanderer and Dr. Li escape to the ruins of the Pentagon, which now serves as a base for the Brotherhood of Steel and is known as the Citadel. With Project Purity still not working despite the Enclave's occupation, the player travels to Vault 87 to find a G.E.C.K. and finish James' work. The player finds out that the vault is a testing ground for the FEV (Forced Evolutionary Virus) and the source of the super mutants in the Capital Wasteland. After the player acquires the G.E.C.K., the Wanderer is ambushed and captured by the Enclave. At the Enclave's Raven Rock base, the player is freed from his cell by the Enclave's leader, President John Henry Eden, and asked for a private audience. However, on the way to his office, Colonel Autumn defies Eden's orders and takes command of the Enclave's military, which is ordered to kill the player. On the way to Eden's office, the player learns that Eden is actually a sentient supercomputer of the ZAX series, which took control of the Enclave after the defeat in Fallout 2 on the West Coast thirty years ago. Eden wants to repeat then-President Dick Richardson's plan with Project Purity and infect the water with a modified strain of FEV that will make it toxic to any mutated life. This plan will wipe out most life in the wasteland, including humans, but the Enclave will be immune due to its genetic "purity" as a result of its isolation and will be able to take control of the area. The Wanderer, who receives a sample of the new F.E.V., is given the choice of leaving peacefully or convincing Eden to destroy the entire base itself. The Lone Wanderer escapes from Raven Rock and returns to the Citadel. With the knowledge they possess, the G.E.C.K., and the means to activate Project Purity, the Brotherhood attacks the Jefferson Memorial, led by a giant robot named Liberty Prime. In the Project Purity control room, the player meets Colonel Autumn and has the choice of persuading him to surrender or killing him. Dr. Li tells the player that the Purity can be activated, but the activation code must be entered manually and that the control room is flooded with deadly radiation. The lone wanderer must decide whether to send Sarah Lyons of the Brotherhood into the extremely irradiated purifier or go in himself. Whoever enters the chamber enters the code 21:6 hinted at in the game and dies from a radiation spike.
