Eternal Champions
Sega released Eternal Champions in 1993 for the Mega Drive/Genesis, hoping to capitalize on the fighting game craze that the gaming industry was experiencing after the huge success of Street Fighter II (1991) and Mortal Kombat (1992). The game attempted to stand out from the crowd with unique features such as a greater emphasis on story, characters from different time periods, reflective projectiles, force fields, fighters carrying weapons, a training mode where players had to defend themselves against robot traps, a novel method of executing moves, and elaborate stage-specific finishing moves called "overkills."
Story
An ominous being known as the Eternal Champion predicts that humanity will soon become extinct because throughout history important people destined for greatness have died prematurely and unjustly. In order to restore balance to the world, the Eternal Champion gathers these souls shortly before their deaths to participate in a fighting tournament. The winner can change his destiny and restore balance to the universe, while the losers are forced to experience their deaths as history intended.
