Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty
Dune II is often considered the first modern real-time strategy game and established many conventions of the genre. Although the game is set in Frank Herbert's famous Dune universe, it is only loosely related to the plot of one of the books or the movies based on it. The player controls one of the three houses and must fight a series of battles against the other houses. In the first levels it's just about earning a certain number of credits, while in the later missions all the enemies must be destroyed. The only resource in the game is spice, which must be collected from harvesters. The spice is converted into credits in a refinery, which are then spent on constructing additional buildings and units. There are two types of terrain: Buildings can only be built on stone, while the Spice can only be found on sand. However, units that move on sand attract the large sandworms of Dune, which are virtually indestructible and can swallow even large units whole. As you level up, new and more advanced buildings and units become available, including structures such as a radar station, a repair facility or defense towers, and as units, various ground troops, light vehicles and tanks. Each house can build a unique special unit and unleash a unique palace effect after building a palace improvement.
Story
The emperor has issued a challenge to each of the houses: "The house that produces the most spices will control Dune. There are no set territories and no rules of engagement." Huge armies have arrived. Now three houses are fighting for control of Dune: the noble Atreides, the treacherous Ordos, and the evil Harkonnen.
