Story

Sketch Turner, a "starving artist" and freelance rock musician living in New York City, is working on his latest comic, Comix Zone. It tells the story of the New World Empire trying to defend Earth from an alien renegade invasion, drawing inspiration from Sketch's strangely vivid dreams and nightmares. One night, while Sketch is working on Comix Zone during a thunderstorm, lightning strikes a panel of his comic. At that moment, the main villain, a powerful mutant named Mortus, escapes the pages of the comic and wants to kill Sketch so he can become flesh and blood and take over the real world. Having no power in the real world, Mortus sends Sketch into the world of his own comic, attracting unopposed enemies who try to kill him. Inside the comic, Sketch meets General Alissa Cyan, who believes he is "the chosen one" who has come to save her post-apocalyptic world from the evil of Mortus and the alien invaders. Alissa ignores Sketch's protests and sends him on his mission, keeping him informed by radio with instructions and clues. It's up to Sketch to stop Mortus' evil plans and find a way out of this strange world. The game has two possible endings. At the end of the game, Alissa is trying to disarm a nuclear weapon that Mortus and the mutants are using to wipe out the New World Empire and humanity when Mortus returns to the comic and throws her into the chamber, which begins to fill with liquid. Mortus then fights Sketch in person. If the player defeats Mortus and the Kreeps he summons quickly enough to drain the liquid and save Alissa before the nuke self-destructs, an ending occurs where Alissa comes to the real world with Sketch and Roadkill, joins the army, and eventually becomes head of security for the United States. Roadkill gets a huge amount of mozzarella cheese and spends a lot of time exploring the city's new sewage system when he's not sleeping under a pile of Sketch's dirty socks. Comix Zone becomes an instant sensation and sells out on its first day, making Sketch famous and the best-selling comic of all time. Alissa defeats Mortus after the chamber fills with liquid and dies when the nuke self-destructs. Sketch and Roadkill come out, but Sketch's comic is destroyed, and he is devastated because while he saved the New World Empire, he couldn't save Alissa.
