Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead
Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead (also known as Cataclysm DDA or CataDDA) is an open-source survival horror roguelike set in a post-apocalyptic and fictional New England. Unlike most roguelikes, it has no objective: the player can freely explore the procedurally generated map, clear areas of monsters, cooperate with NPCs and build shelters and vehicles. The gameplay is mainly based on daily survival, and the game tracks parameters such as hunger, thirst, morale, disease and temperature that the player must manage to stay alive. Like most roguelikes, Cataclysm: DDA has a turn-based gameplay. The world supports seasons and dynamic weather conditions, and the length of the seasons can be changed during world creation. In a typical world, there are cities, villages, rivers, forests, bridges and other landmarks. Cities and towns usually have all the usual facilities found in the real world, such as houses, department stores, shopping malls, parking lots, swimming pools, hospitals, shopping centers, etc. Exotic locations such as science labs, military facilities and missile silos can be found in remote locations around the world. The latest versions support experimental 3-D buildings.
Story
You step out of the shelter into the dim light of an overcast day and look around you for the first time since the disaster. The world as you knew it is gone, and in its place is a twisted mockery of everything that was once familiar to you. Everything has been thrown overboard in your frantic escape to the shelter. You have nothing to eat, nothing to drink, and no weapons. You have nothing but your ingenuity and a determination to survive, even if the odds are very slim. A grim prospect lies ahead for you. Perhaps even worse than the nightmares of last night, when you were tormented by dreams in which the dead raised themselves to snatch life from the living. You look up the street and walk toward a house in the distance. Even though you are miserable at the moment, you have an uneasy feeling that darker days lie ahead.
