Age of Empires

Age of Empires (AoE) is a history-based real-time strategy video game developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft. The game uses the Genie, a 2D sprite-based game engine. In the game, the player takes on the role of the leader of an ancient civilization that he advances through four ages (Stone, Tool, Bronze and Iron Ages), gaining access to new and improved units with each advance.

Story

In Age of Empires the player must develop a civilization from a handful of hunter-gatherers to a vast Iron Age empire. To ensure victory, the player must collect resources to pay for new units, buildings and more advanced technologies. Resources must also be preserved, because as the game progresses, no new resources become available, meaning that if you cut down a tree, it won't grow back. Twelve civilizations are available, each with individual attributes, including a different number of available technologies and units. Each civilization has unique technologies, so no civilization has all the technologies possible in the game. An important part of the game is the advancement through four ages. These are the Stone Age (Mesolithic/Paleolithic), the Tool Age (Neolithic/Chalcolithic), the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age. The advancement between the ages is researched in the city center and each advancement brings the player new technologies, weapons and units.
