Advance Wars
Just because this fight fits in the palm of your hand doesn't mean that the stakes are low. On the contrary, in this all-or-nothing battle you'll have access to guns, grenades, rocket launchers and weapons of all kinds. Players take command of an army that wants to reclaim a world that has been torn apart by warring factions. The battle map is essentially a grid, and moving units is like moving chess pieces on a board - each unit can move a certain number of squares within that grid and can only attack at a certain distance from certain enemies. Advance Wars offers more than 115 maps, a map editor, head-to-head games via link cables, and an easy-to-follow tutorial mode for beginners.
Story
The story of Advance Wars begins in the tutorial mode "Field Training", where the Orange Star nation is at war with the neighboring Blue Moon nation, with Olaf as the commanding officer (CO) of the Blue Moon Army. Olaf has suddenly ordered an invasion of the Orange Star Nation and finds himself in battle with the Orange Star Army. The campaign continues the story that began in the tutorial. Nell, the de facto leader of the Orange Star COs, gives the player the task of a tactical advisor for the Orange Star Army. As the game progresses, the player follows the war effort in all four countries, each of which has its own COs. At the beginning, the player only has a choice of one CO, Andy, and two other Orange Star COs, Max and Sami, to advise as the story progresses, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Depending on which CO the player chooses as an advisor, a mission is sometimes split into two or three missions, in which the maps and dialogues can be different. After completing the mission, the story paths may split depending on which CO was chosen in the previous mission, differing from the other path and eventually leading back to the main path. After winning a battle against Green Earth, Andy is mysteriously accused by Green Earth's commander, Eagle, of committing a treasonous attack against Green Earth. After defeating Blue Moon troops who invaded Orange Star's land, Orange Star's army invades Blue Moon's land and defeats its troops. The Blue Moon COs, Olaf and Grit, turn out to be COs who both used to work for the Orange Star Army but switched to Blue Moon. When the Orange Star Army only wants to move through the other two countries, Green Earth and Yellow Comet, the COs of the countries, like Kanbei of Yellow Comet, assume an impending invasion and declare war on the Orange Star Army in their country. Later, Drake, the commander of Green Earth, tells Eagle that the Orange Star Army did not attack Green Earth, saying, "This whole conflict was staged from the beginning." Meanwhile, Yellow Comet CO Sonja and Grit try to figure out who is really behind the attacks. When Eagle meets Andy again, he again accuses him of attacking Green Earth. The Orange Star COs finally convince Eagle that it wasn't Andy who attacked Green Earth. This explains why the three nations declared war on Orange Star, thinking Andy attacked them first. When Eagle meets Sonja, Sonja also tells Eagle that it wasn't Andy who was behind the attacks, but someone else, and goes with her to see what she discovered. It turns out that the enigmatic Black Hole Army, under the command of Sturm, is the real enemy. Using a CO doppelganger clone of Andy, Sturm has instigated a war between the four countries to confuse, weaken, and eventually conquer them. Once this is revealed, the four countries join forces to drive Black Hole out of their country, Cosmo Land. The COs are automatically selected depending on which path the player has taken during the game.
